CYCLE MY MOST VALUED TEEN POSSESSION - 55

 JOURNEY DOWN THE MEMORY LANE

We have all had our crush or passion to be the proud owner a Cycle , Wrist Watch , A Pocket Transistor Radio or many such items during our teens .  I am purposely leaving the crush for                                        , as it might create a nasty scene back home now at this late and happy stage .

Cycle is one item which i am sure would have been on our mind just as we graduated from all fours as a toddler to the little kid who could successfully  walk across the room to his mamma . The Baby Cycle on which we learnt the almost impossible art of balancing would have borne the effects of the umpteen falls that we might have had while learning to ride the bike or cycle .
The bruises on our hands , legs and knees would be a pale shadow of the broken parts , dents , scratches on the body of the poor baby Cycle .
Getting the 25 paise for the hourly hire charges was a pain in itself as many , many hours of good behaviour had to be ensured before the parents would part with that princely sum . It took  ages of good behavior and hours of renting the cycle and  many falls and injuries for  one to  master the art of balancing and safe riding .

During my school days the most popular brands in Kharagpur where i did my schooling were SEN RALEIGH , ROBINHOOD , HERCULES , ATLAS AND  THE ÒEASTERN STAR .

Though i had longed for a Raleigh Geared Bike , what i could finally persuade my parents to get me was a SECONHAND 24 " EASTERN STAR LADIES BIKE  , Which at that time cost us a huge sum of Rs 60 . It is almost equivalent to the cost of 2 cups of coffees now at The Saravana Bhavan .

Endless cleaning , washing and wiping managed to keep it almost looking new  , well almost !!
I was the proud owner of a cycle . The minor detail  that it was a Ladies Cycle and a bit oversized for my puny frame hardly seemed to matter . Gallivanting the streets of Kharagpur to and from school with the mandatory Neck Tie which was part of the school uniform flying above your head gave one an almost invincible feel .

EASTERN STAR I DO MISS YOU EVEN NOW.
