ANAND MOVIE REVISITED
Anand Mahindra's ( Auto Tycoon ) recent tweet on the Movie ANAND in which he brought back memories of the Movie which he saw some 50 years back as a 15 year old has revived my own memories of this iconic movie .
I too have very fond memories of this movie which I saw as a 21 year old on the 15 th of March 1971 at the Lotus Theatre near Shiv Sagar Estate/ Haji Ali . I have not been to Mumbai for a long time and so I am not sure if this very Theatre exists even now or if it has been converted in to a Multiplex .
Rajesh Khanna was the reigning superstar by then and Amitabh Bachchan was just beginning to get a firm toehold in Bollywood .
This movie is one of my all time favourites . I think it could be the movie which I have seen the maximum number of times . Be it Rajesh Khanna as Anand , Amitabh as Bhasker Banerjee , Johny Walker as Isa Bhai Suratwala , Lalita Pawar as the stern Nurse D'Sa Madam or Ramesh Deo as Dr Kulkarni, all played their parts to perfection .
Rajesh Khanna / Amitabh performance was the highlight as was the Hrishida Direction and Salil Choudhri s music . The outstanding feature was the dialogue of Gulzaar some of which are still fresh in my mind some 50 years after they were originally penned . The climax Tape Recorded Dialogue running out of spool at its very end being the ultimate highlight .
HOW I WISH THERE WERE MORE SUCH MOVIES
Yes, right. Memorable movie!
ReplyDeleteMy all-time favorite is Guide. In all these years I have observed that what we enjoyed years ago, does not give us the same pleasure when we watch it now, Guide being the only exception - for me.
ReplyDeleteGuide is the brainchild of the genius, Vijay Anand, who was at the peak of his creativity as well as his awakening then. He write the script in 18 days.
Everytime you watch it, it gives you a new life lesson.
And, all round, brilliant performances by one and all. A flawless movie.
Anand was very good, handled delicately by Hrishida. But Rajesh Khanna was given to exaggerations in performance. I recall watching and enjoying Bawarchi. Then it came on TV not too long ago and I just could not watch Rajesh Khanna's over-the-top ramblings.
I find that I enjoy Dev Anand's nuanced, simple, natural style. Dilip Kumar was a genius. Raj Kapoor could be a bit too dramatic.
