ON THE EVE OF A LANDMARK - FINAL
Continuation of Previous Posts 1, 2 , 3 and 4
Scottish born Alexander Graham Bell developed the world’s first working Telephone and received its US Patent in 1876 .
Reputedly , the first successful words using his new “ instrument “ as Bell called it , were spoken to his associate Thomas Watson who was out of earshot in another room . ‘ Mr Watson , come here , I want to see you .’
Bells family background had a lot to do for this . His Grandfather , Father and Uncle were all public speakers whereas his Mother and Wife were Deaf . This led him to research in hearing and speech . His work with deaf people and acoustics gave to the world what we now call as Telephone .
My first association was with the phone was with an Instrument as in the above picture . This was provided to my father by the South Eastern Railways at Kharagpur Bungalow no 620 and had 2110 as it's contact number. Many pranks were played with it while dialling many known and unknown numbers. Have also been at the receiving end of the same on many occasions. At my age it will not be wise to elaborate on it any further .
During College Days the Payphone at our Sapta Rishi Mandal Colony in Sion - Koliwada came in very handy to contact friends and relatives.
By dropping 50 Paise coins in , you could make local calls . Some of my friends had mastered the art of inserting a metal wire from the bottom and making the calls for FREE . On some super lucky days , a whole lot of previously inserted coins would come down in a cluster . The metal wire was kept at a known place for a select few for this sole purpose .
Fast forwarding to the days at Madura Coats Colony at VK Puram , receiving any outstation calls was not an issue as our good old Palani Murugan the Telephone operator would transfer the call to the Colony Club where I could connect. I distinctly remember contacting Home in this fashion from Ieper in Belgium during my training with PICANOL .
For making Long distance STD calls one had to drive down to Ambasamudram Head Post Office and wait for a few hours for connecting to my relatives in Chennai or Mumbai during any Emergency . It came together with every other disturbance possible and made conversation very difficult .
The Mobile Phone made a nascent beginning in our parts at the turn of the Millennium. Connectivity was very poor and the cost of making the calls prohibitively high .
Better sense prevailed upon our Government and the agencies providing the services who put in all the efforts to provide the ever widening and fast connectivity. To day it is amongst the cheapest in the entire World .
Simultaneously the expansion of the WIFI Network across the length and breadth of the country has brought about a Sea Change in our Lifestyle.
This small gadget in the palm of our hand is now the GATEWAY to the world . If you have a Mobile in Hand with a WIFI , there is hardly any job that is beyond it . We all stay connected in seconds . Sharing Pictures ; messages ; transferring money ; watching movies --------+++ it is endless and futile to list the same .
Thank the people who made this Possible , From Alexander Graham Bell to that unknown Person who is sweating it out in the sun and digging the trench to provide the WI-FI in your Home .
FIBRE CONNECTIVITY FOR YOUR WIFI
STAY HAPPY , STAY CONNECTED IN EVERY WAY POSSIBLE !!!
MOST IMPORTANTLY : I take this opportunity to thank each and everyone of you PERSONALLY for keeping me in your mind and to Wish me on this DAY over various Social Media Platforms .
A BIG THANK YOU — GOD BLESS YOU
AND YOUR FAMILY
