YOU ARE JUST AS OLD AS YOU LIKE TO BELIEVE
Age 70 , 75 + or thereabouts is a rather difficult place to be in . Nothing can be more apt than the Tamil " ingeyum illai , angeyum illai " இங்கேயும் இல்லை , அங்கேயும் இல்லை "or the Hindi " dhobi kaa kutta ( kutkaa ) naa ghar kaa naa ghat kaa " धोबी का कुत्ता ना घर का ना घाट का somehow seem to sum up the feeling .
The years of toil to make both ends meet and the efforts taken to bring up the family to its present state of comfort would have started to take its toll on your health and your general well being . The health related niggles will be conspicuous only by their absence .
It is hard for one to realize that unless one is in a very specialized field of excellence , the chances of employment are almost next to Nil . The fact that the final bell toll which seem closer each passing day , seem to add on to the misery .
There have been occasions when i have had to manage the house in the absence of my better half on a few occasions . The time frame for these periods have ranged from a couple of days to almost to a maximum of almost a year , when my better half and Son had to stay at Tirunelveli during his final year of Schooling at IIPE . Staying as i do in this village of Agasthiarpatty , there was always a speculation among my friends and relatives as to how I manage to spend my time during her absence .
Being a strict veggie has its own set of problems . To start with there are are no hotels or eating joints that do not have anything to do with a four legged creature or anything that swims , flies or crawls . My prowess is almost rudimentary as far as cooking goes and a better part of almost 2 hours or more is taken for cooking what has to perforce pass off as lunch . The cleaning and watering of the garden takes a better part of an hour .
Taking care of the garden and clearing of the fallen leaves and watering the plants does take up a bit of time .
Being a lover of music especially of the Hindi vintage variety keeps me in high spirits . The neighbors on either side of my house , must by now be very adept with Hindi film music by now .
The idiot box does keep me occupied , what with all the election related talkshows , chats and surveys at any part of the day or night . That it is one sided at most times is a small matter and does keep me glued on to the TV nonetheless .
Lastly with the smartphone in hand and a fairly fast net connection one is just a click away from all your friends or relatives .
