27 " HARDCASE SUITCASES AND OUR RAILWAYS -26
Quite recenly , my daughter and family were returning to Canada after their visit to India and as can only be expected they had six of these 27" Hardpack suitcases for the four who were travelling to Canada apart from self and mami who were going to Chennai to see them off with small suitcases.
We were then stationed at Ambas and had to catch the flight at Chennai .We managed to get confirmed reservations for all 6 of us in a single bay in AC 3 TIER by the Pothigai Express Ex Shenkottai to Chennai Egmore .
My grandson and granddaughter were thrilled and looking forward to this experience as it is not often that they do overnight travel in a train in Canada .
Our thrills were shortlived and it soon turned out to be nightmare when we realized that not one of the 27 " Hardback suitcases would slide below the berths . Try as we might , this exercise turned futile .
Each suitcase had to be perforce accommodated in the berth allotted to us which occupied a major portion of the sleeping space in the berth and we had a most uncomfortable night in the make do space available .
This raises very serious Questions
1 ) Has no Railway Authority who matter ever envisaged that such a problem could arise .
2 ) Have they never travelled with such a luggage
3 )Does the Railways expect people going abroad to shun the usage of the railways and use other alternative but costly modes .
4 ) Should the use of all Hardcase suitcases be banned in Indian Railways
5 ) should one use only softcover suitcases
6 ) The luggage manufacturers will have to remodel and stop showing elephants sitting on their hardcase suitcases with no apparent damage to their wellmade suitcases except to the owner who will not be able to use it in rail travel .
