MANY THINGS TO LEARN FROM OUR
TAMIZH CALANDER
We somehow always seem to look down upon what our elders have taught us and not only conveniently overlook the same but also make fun of these beliefs as old fashioned .
In the Tamil Calender we celebrate the First Day of the following months as special and auspicious days . First days in CHITTIRAI , AADI , IYPASSI AND THAI have always been special to us . We are used to the idea of celebrating these days as part of a ritual . Did you know that our forefathers had a very scientific reasoning behind the importance of these days .
We are taught from our primary school that the Sun rises in the East . Have we ever checked the place of the rising Sun with respect to any given point ? No we have never done it .
That Lord Macaulay , I am not sure if I have spelt him correctly or some such person saw to it that our own Scientific Discoveries were usurped as theirs . Now this is a topic for discussion in some other forum .
Yes , the Sun does rise in the exact EAST only on a particular day . It then keeps moving towards the NORTEAST till a certain point and then returns towards the EAST and move towards the SOUTHEAST and back to the EAST position . This motion is similar to the movement of the PENDULUM on the HUGE WALL CLOCK .
OK , but what does all this have to do with the TAMIL months mentioned above .
The SUN rises in the exact EAST position on
CHITTIRAI 1 OR TAMIL NEW YEAR . In science it is called as Summer Equinox .
It raises in the maximum NORTHEAST position on AADI PERUKKU , Solistice .
The Sunrise starts moving towards the EAST and on the exact EAST position that is IYPASSI 1 or DEEPAWALI or Winter Equinox .
It again moves towards the SOUTHEAST and on THAI 1 , we celebrate it as THAI PONGAL , Solistice .
This journey of the SUN from CHITTIRAI THIRUNAAL TO AADI PERUKKU TO AADI PERUKKU TO THAI PONGAL AND BACK TO CHITTIRAI 1 takes exactly one year .

AADI ( SUMMER SOLISTICE ) AADIPERUKKU
IYPASSI ( EQUINOX ) DEEPAWALI
THAI ( WINTER SOLSITICE ) THAI PONGAL.
THIS MESSAGE SHOULD BE PASSED ONTO OUR FUTURE GENERATIONS TO UNDERSTAND THE SCIENTIFIC REASONING WHICH OUR FOREFATHERS HAD FOR LONG BEEN FOLLOWING AND WHICH DUE TO IGNORANCE OR MISPLACED POLITICAL COMPULSION OR WE FAIL TO ACKNOWLEDGE.
