SET THE CLOCK BACK 80 / 90 s - 319
SETTING THE CLOCK BACK
TO THE 80 s or 90 s
If by some magic , we could turn back the wheels of TIME MACHINE to the 80 s or 90 s , the transformation that we are now seeing in the 2021 is sure to give the feel of having lived almost in the Stone ages in the 80 s or 90 s .
1) Close to 7000 employees of Madura Coats rushing to work between 6.30 am and 7.00 am each morning on their cycles on the narrow road to the Mill Gate after traversing the Tambarabarani river on the old IRON BRIDGE , always left one in awe . .
1A ) The numbers involved are much less now and hardly anyone uses a cycle . The 2 wheeler is the preferred mode of travel and the sizeable proportion of the workers being of the fairer sex , the Company run Bus services ferry them to and from work each day . The more than a century old IRON BRIDGE is now in a dilapidated state and a relic to the British Era lineage. This has now made way for the modern 2 way all purpose concrete bridge .
2 ) The residents of the Mill Colony had the pleasure of watching the latest blockbuster movies of the times every alternate weekend at the Open Air Colony Club Theatre. Tamil , English and Hindi Movies were all screened here . My own company allotted home or quarters was just opposite the Colony Club and I and my family had the luxury of playing host to the stars of KOLLYWOOD , HOLLYWOOD AND BOLLYWOOD from the comfort of our house .
2A ) The World is now within the palm of ones hand and the OTT platform make viewing of movies in any laguage and from any country possible . Sub titles make it even more easier to follow and view these movies at any part of the day or night without any hazzle.
3 ) Murphy , Telerad , National Panasonic , Sony, Radio , Transistor , Cassette Audio Player , CD Video player were all prized possessions in every home .
3A ) Hardly any of them find a place in anyone's home now. The 4 × 6 inches gadget that each of us carry within the palm of our hand has put paid to all these items .
4 ) Seiko , Favre Lueba , Henri Sandoz & Fills and our own HMT watches were the Timekeepers and a must on everyone s wrist be it a male or female .
4 A ) My guess is that hardly anyone uses a watch . The timekeeping job plus the act as an alarm clock is again taken care by that tiny gadget in your left Shirt Pocket or the Lady Handbag.
5 ) Vehicular Traffic was very limited and the Petrol Bunk or Gas Station used to be quite distant from each other , sometimes even as far as 40 kms .
5A ) Times have now changed . There are atleast 15 Petrol Bunks within the 10 kms radius of where I now stay in the tiny Agasthiarpatty.
6 ) Very few members of the fairer sex made use of the 2 or 4 wheelers
6A ) A small place like Ambai has a sizeable number of female 2 and 4 wheeler riders on the Road now .
7 ) A Car was a luxury and very few had a two wheeler .
7 A ) Almost every 3 rd house now has a car and atleast one two wheeler in every house if not more .
8 ) AC , FRIDGE AND WASHING MACHINES ALL IN THE SAME HOUSE WAS A LUXURY
8 A ) Upscale models of all the three items are a common feature in most houses .
9 ) Majority of the Students went to Govt Aided Schools .
9 A ) A large proportion opt and go to high end Private Schools .
10 ) It was considered a shame if one was sighted consuming an Alcoholic Drink or even be seen in the company of persons having a swig of the invigorating drink .
10 A ) It is now almost considered an un pardonable sin if you refuse a drink .
The list is almost endless and I prefer to leave it here for fear of being branded ^ An old man making the usual noises of everything OLD being GOLD and everything NOW being a TRASH " .
I WAS HAPPY THEN AND AM EVEN MORE HAPPIER NOW .
