 UNFORGETTABLE FIRST TIME ERRANDS 

       

      

Certain first time errands stay in our minds for ever . One of the first such errands could be the purchase of a grocery or any other such item that you were asked to  by your mother from the nearby store or shop .

I distinctly remember my first errand to purchase Coats Sewing Thread Spool from the Devidas  Stores , Purana Bazrar at Kharagpur. My mother seemed to be vry particular about the Coats Brand . Little did I then know that I would in my later years be incharge of establishing these very same Coats Spool Winding Machines at Omega Threads in Ambasamudram  .

The distance was hardly 500 mts but the incentive of 2 Annas which in those days would fetch 10 Parry Chocolates let me do the job on the double . 

Due to my father's frequent transfers , I did part of my schooling at Bhilai at my sister's place . She was senior to me by quite a distance . I think I was in my 6 th standard when I was entrusted with sending a Money Order from the Street 5 , Sector Ten  Post Office . It is hard to describe the feeling of successfully filling the form and getting the job done .

The last 2 years of my schooling were again at Kharagpur . My father as he was otherwise officially engaged wanted me to encash a SBI Cheque from the IIT-  HIJLI Branch . The constant check of the pocket to feel the Cheque as I went cycling to the bank now appears comical when you think of it . 

The Cheque in the pocket for Rs 2000 which   was almost a fortune in those days  gave me the feel of being a scion from a Royal Family .
