MAKING LEARNING ENGLISH EASIER -344

                A VERY MUCH CHERISHED BOOK

There are certain things in life which never seize to amaze me .

As I have mentioned in my earlier Blogs , most of my school education in the formative years have been in the Hindi Heartland . My fathers employment in the Railways in a section which extended from Calcutta to Vishakapatnam and Calcutta to Nagpur on the South Eastern Railway meant frequent transfers to places like Calcutta , Kharagput , Bilaspur , Chakradharpur , Adra , Visakhapatnam , Nagpur  . All these in the Hindi Heartland meant that I was quite comfortable in Hindi and could also manage Bengali and Telugu. This did ofcourse have its flipside , my Tamil especially the reading and writing part left a lot to be desired and my English was next only to nil .

The last 4 years prior to his final Retirement , my father was posted at Kharagpur and being a  late born this  also coincided with my final School Years .

Call it an overwhelming confidence in my capacity or sheer luck , i was admitted in an English Medium School in the ISC ( Indian School Certificate ) stream . My English till then consisted a vocabulary which had all of 2 letters a YES and a NO and even there never sure of the correct answer to a situation.

" aren't you ever sure of a correct answer ? "

Often had me puzzled if I was to reply with a YES  or a NO .

English in the ISC carried the maximum weightage as the pass mark in this Subject was 50% while the pass mark in other subjects was 40% .  The Eleventh Standard Board Exam Answer Papers used to be corrected in England and hence the name SENIOR CAMBRIDGE .

Yours truely and my English Teacher Shri Debi Prasad had to struggle a great deal to make me get through the English Subject and that too quite creditably .

This is where I recall the part played by the Grammer Book by M/S WREN AND MARTIN. These noble souls Authored the English Grammer Book which was first published in the year 1935 for ENGLISH  to be taught in the then Colonial India and Pakistan .

My personal relationship with these reknowned author's  Books have never been very good . Inspite of my best efforts I found it rather  hard to comprehend their varied interpretations of the English Grammer and its  Laws . Suffice to say that , I got through the English Board Examination with creditable marks and my thanks are due to M/S WREN AND MARTIN and to my English Teacher and Principal Sir , SHRI DEBI PRASAD  .

I would suggest that you recommend these  Books to your Grand Children now . It is sure to make Learning English Much Easier .
