MORE THAN 120 YEAR OLD TREE
Many of my posts have been about the picture perfect scenic beauty of places in and around Ambasamudram . Being on the foothills of the Western Ghats or Pothigai Malai and the River Tambarabarani snaking through it , the greenery around is picturesque for most part of the year .
Huge trees lining both sides of the road seem to welcome everyone from their parched city landscapes.
One such place of special interest is the stretch from Ambai Railway Level Crossing to just past Agasthiarpatty . Many huge trees line this stretch .
People of the area and those associated with HARVEY MILLS / COATS VIYELLA , MADURA COATS , MADURA COATS PRIVATE LIMITED will recall Ewart House , Miller Bungalow , Middle Bungalow and West Bungalow on this stretch . These were the residences of High Ranking ENGLISH MEN who set up the A & F HARVEY MILLS more than 130 years back .Yous truely was a resident of Ewart House , before it went onto become the VIKAASA SCHOOL . Let there also be no misconception , i was was offered accomodation as there was no vacant houses in the Mill Colony at VK Puram and was lucky enough to be offered accommodation there .
These English Gentlemen with the Ladies of their House took pains to plant and took all measures to nurture these into healthy trees and which are now a proof of their pains and efforts for the entire stretch which later extended upto the Mill Gate .
The nearly 130 year old BLACKBERRY , NAVA PAZHAM OR KALA JAMUN Tree in front of my house at Agasthiarpatty is a testimony for the same . Though , a part of it has since ripped off , it attracts youngsters and others who feast on the Nava Pazham . Many a Myna and Peacock have made it their home and are sure to be seen at their specific places as dusk sets in each evening . Some neighbors even claim to have sighted Monitor Lizards ( UDUMBU ) on the tree .
As they say , all good things must come to a tragic end . The Land Mafia is on the job and these huge trees are being razed to the ground one by one .
SAD INDEED
