HARVEST 2021 - SELF ON THE HARVESTING                                                MACHINE

A combination of factors have gone on to make this harvest a very exciting and an almost roller coaster ride with the fortune of weather changing so often .

5 days of continuous heavy downpour during the fag end of the monsoon which caused serious flooding and left large tracts of land totally submerged in water was a sure dampner of a  good harvest later . Fortunately our paddy field at Brahmadesam was not as badly affected as many  other places around this area .

Covid , not finding suitable hands at the right time were also a cause for anxiety .

Lastly , with the harvest just a week away , the non seasonal heavy rains last week was a serious setback . The paddy stalk just awaiting harvest , stooped down due to the rains  in to the water and began  to germinate again and make the work of the HARVESTER MACHINE that much more difficult .The normal 90 minute hiring time almost doubled to 3 hours .

This coupled with the increase in fuel pricing , the cost of hiring these machines have shot up from Rs 1500 to 2500 per hour of harvesting time . Fortunately , the Driver of the Machine Sandeep Madhesi  knew hardly any Tamil . This was the first time when I made a first - time ride on the Harvesting Machine and my near 90 minute tete a tete with him in Hindi did help me in getting a small concession in the billing . It is beyond me as to even hazard a guess as to why does a 18 year youth from Gorakhpur in U P , make a living by driving these Machines in a almost  non descript place like Brahmadesam near Ambasamudram , are there no hands to be found locally ?  I firmly believe that this whole story of joblessness is a whole lot political vote catching  hogwash and  trash . I hate to admit it but I fear that the all around freebies and an aversion of our youth to be gainfully employed by sweating it out  could be a reason .

To sum up , after taking stock of all expenses in to account , i find that I have just managed to be away from being in the RED  by just a whisker .

But , nothing , absolutely nothing can match the satisfaction of being able to produce nearly 3800 Kg of Paddy this harvest season inspite and despite all the hazzle  by both the nature and otherwise .

  1. Very good. Producing your own food is certainly a satisfactory experience. I like to cook and even that gives me satisfaction. Imagine growing it myself!

  2. Thank you mamaji for the insight. That's why it is said that the Indian farmer has to grow technically. You have done it. Good to see you using the latest machine. God bless you

  3. Glad to hear that harvest is complete. In India Agriculture is always a gambling and nothing to predict. Thank God 🙏
