BIG HEART INDEED - 440

   A REALLY BIG HEARTED MAN

My Car which I have always regarded as a piece of scientific and engineering marvel  had  chosen  a particularly wrong day for a BREAKDOWN . I was headed for an important office meet in the city  Summer being at its peak , the sun was making its presence felt in more ways than one . Huffing , puffing and perspiring profusely I went through the possible options . Bus remained the only option left as this being a remote place , getting a cab was out of the question .

I was fortunate to be able to board an already crowded bus . There was no place to sit . After a few stops , one seated  man was getting ready to disembark from the bus . A man well past his middle age and by the look of him not so very well endowed was standing very close to the seated man and   could have very easily  taken the  seat . But he  took just one look around and spotted me  and offered the just emptied  seat .

I noticed that this man did the same a few more times during the course of the bus travel even as other passengers were disembarking .

Finally at the last and  final  destination stop  all of us got down together and I could not resist my curiosity to ask him as to why he had offered the seat to others when he himself could very well  have occupied the same .

His answer came as a complete surprise .

" I am a pretty illiterate man with very limited means . I do not have the resources to help others financially as I find it difficult to make my own ends meet . God has been kind enough to leave me with a healthy body even after all the strenuous work that I do . I take this bus route everyday for my work . This very act of giving my seat I feel is the only way I can give someone, something  . It gives me  profound satisfaction to know that I have contributed something to make someone a bit more comfortable and happy . Standing for a few more minutes to do that is a very small price to pay for that " .

This answer left me absolutely speechless . How easy to classify this man as a " no gooder " .

He had more goodness in him and an inclination to help others  in his own humble way than many others well entrenched in life and with A FAT BANK ACCOUNTS but alas with a VERY SHRUNKEN HEART .

My effort at Translation of an original piece in Tamil  which I liked very much
