         HOW DEPENDENT ARE

          WE ON THE INTERNET

Over the years , we have all learnt to be Tech Savvy . Be it the Desk Top Computer , Lap Top , Tablet or the Mobile Smartphone. We have all made use of the same at some point in our lives .  Age , Gender , Education or Financial Status hardly seem to matter .

The Fruit Juice Seller or the Shoe Repair Artisan collecting the charges by making use of PHONEPAY for services provided by them is a common sight in Bangalore or many other cities in India .

The situation in the Western and Fully Developed Nations is Even worse .  Take my very recent experience in Canada . I had to get the Life Certificate for my Better Half for Her Pension Payment in India but being in Canada for the all important document ,  we had booked an Appointment with the State Bank of India - Canada at its Scarborough Branch. Note , visiting a Bank for any Services , Require an Online Appointment . We got our appointment fixed at 2.30 pm the following day .

I was witness to What one day of Internet OUTAGE meant to the Canadians .

A large part of Canada and it's people have their Internet and Mobile Telephonic Services rendered by the ROGERS SERVICES and my Son too has opted for their Services .

I was surprised to see that there were no WhatsApp messages or Mails on my Mobile even as I got up yesterday . My son informed me that there was an Internet Outage even as he was leaving for his Weekend MBA Classes at around 7 am in the morning .

We hoped that the services would be restored without  much of a delay . This was not to be and we could not even book an Uber Cab to take us to Scarborough as there was no mobile connection . My DIL came forward to drive us to the Bank which was some 30 kms away in Scarborough in a locality which she had not frequented before .  Google Map , Messaging Services or any other Mobile Services being Inaccessible,  we had a  great difficulty in locating the Bank . It might be odd , but pedestrians on the streets of  Canada even in a Metropolis like Toronto are a rare sight and finding one to guide you to a place that you are looking for a much more rarer one .  The situation was not far different from asking a man dropped deep inside  the Indian Ocean and asking him to find a way to the nearest shore .

The time taken for the actual Business End of our visit took hardly 15 minutes at the SBI and we have to be thankful for that .  Visiting the Indian Consulate in Downtown Toronto for the same would have taken a whole day if not more . It is often reported that people spend the whole night in a queue at the Indian Consulate in Toronto should any need arise for their services . .

We had some shopping to do at the Walmart and a visit to McDonald's  for Coffee and the  French Fries was decided . With the Net Down, payments were only by Cash or Credit Cards . It is not a practice in these parts to carry cash on them and Debit Card Payment is the chosen option . The Thousands of Dollars in their accounts were almost useless on such occasions. It is in situations like these that the foresightedness of the elderly like me come in handy . The cash in the wallet were a great help .

All this does teach us to be prepared for such unforeseen emergencies however Tech Savvy we may be .
